The typical Chicago small business website was built once, several years ago, by someone who is no longer reachable. It looks acceptable on a laptop and performs badly on a phone. The phone number is an image in a header. The service area is either missing or an undifferentiated list of forty suburb names. Nothing about it was built to be found or to convert.

That matters more than it used to, because local search is overwhelmingly mobile and Google weighs real-world mobile performance. A site that takes six seconds to become usable on cellular data loses a meaningful share of visitors before they see anything — and those visitors go back to the results page and pick a competitor.

The fix is not a redesign in the cosmetic sense. It is rebuilding around the two things a local business site has to do: load fast on a phone, and make calling or booking the easiest action on the page. Everything else is secondary.
